Hot Pepper Wax Natural Insect Repellent and Animal Repellent products invented amid necessity

In early January 1989, an organic chemist with a thriving business selling organic plant nutrients out of Western Pennsylvania received a call from an Ohio pepper grower. The farmer had been fighting spider mites in his greenhouses since Thanksgiving using chemical insecticides. The chemical killed, but in a matter of a few days a new generation would emerge, more resistant to the chemical than the last. Production had dropped from several hundred pounds of peppers a week to less than a hundred.

This call triggered the research and testing that led to the development of Hot Pepper Wax products, a natural insect and animal repellent that is wax-based and uses cayenne pepper as its primary ingredient. Because the pesticide business is heavily regulated, it would take five years before HPW could be sold as a product.

Hot Pepper Wax, Inc. holds patents in the United States and Canada. HPW is EPA registered, as is its production plant in Greenville, Pennsylvania. The product is registered for sale in most states. For a list of state registrations, click here.
